Year 6 tutoring for the high school transition

Families do not need to arrive with a perfect diagnosis. This page helps you choose a starting point, then the first lesson turns that into a practical plan.

Year 6 is the final year of primary school and a practical time to strengthen the skills students will carry into high school. Reading, writing, maths, reasoning, organisation and confidence all start to matter in more visible ways.

Erudite tutors can support comprehension, essay planning, grammar, vocabulary, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebraic thinking, geometry, data and multi-step problem-solving. Lessons can follow classroom topics or focus on the gaps most likely to affect Year 7.

For NSW families considering selective school entry, tutoring can also help students practise reading, mathematical reasoning, writing, time management and exam familiarity without making every lesson feel like a high-pressure test.

Primary to high school readiness

Building confidence for Year 7 and selective pathways

Year 6 tutoring can help students become more deliberate learners before high school. Tutors can model how to plan a written response, show working in maths, manage time, revise weak areas and approach unfamiliar questions without shutting down.

The focus can shift as the year changes: school assignments, selective preparation, confidence, extension, or a transition plan for Year 7. Families receive clear updates so they know what is being worked on and why.

Common questions

Questions families ask before starting Year 6 tutoring.

What should Year 6 tutoring focus on?

Year 6 tutoring often focuses on reading comprehension, writing structure, grammar, vocabulary, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebraic thinking, geometry, data, problem-solving and study routines for high school.

Can Year 6 tutoring help with the move to high school?

Yes. Tutors can help students build routines for planning, revision, organisation, showing working, asking questions and handling more independent school expectations before Year 7 begins.

Can Year 6 tutoring support selective school preparation?

Yes. For NSW families considering selective school entry, tutoring can include reading, writing, mathematical reasoning, time management and exam familiarity while still protecting confidence.

Can tutoring help if my child has gaps from earlier primary years?

Yes. The tutor can identify the gaps most likely to affect Year 7, then rebuild them through targeted practice connected to current schoolwork.

How do parents track Year 6 tutoring progress?

Tutors provide updates on the lesson focus, what improved and what comes next. This is especially useful when priorities shift between assignments, selective preparation and high school readiness.

If you need a tutor for your kids, Erudite Tuition is great! I've used them for almost 2years as i felt due to covid my kids education went down hill:-( I love that are able to come to my house and tutor both of my kids @ the same time(yr 3 & yr 5 students) my kids love their tutor Deveka and the company itself is really good. I've never had an issue with either one. I've recommended this company to friends and family and will continue to do so. Great work guys. Thanks heaps😁

Jared was fantastic. Patient, dedicated, engaging. We really felt that he was as invested in our daughter doing well on her OC test as we are. She loved him. We couldn't recommend him more highly. Thank you.
